VEHICLE GRAPHICS 101

ARTWORK STAGE

The first step in having your vehicle lettered is bringing it into Signet’s Winchester office for photographing and measurement.  While a member of our Art Department is examining your vehicle, give them an idea of what sort of graphics you have in mind.  Let them know what areas on the vehicle you would like covered (doors, tailgate, etc.), what color you had in mind, what you want the lettering to say, and any logos or images you would like featured.

Next, one of our artists will work up a design based on your requests and ideas, and send a visual proof to the e-mail address or fax number you’ve provided.  This proof will make use of the photographs we’ve taken, so that you can see the prospective design as it would appear on your vehicle.  Study this proof carefully, and think about what other drivers will see as you drive your vehicle down the road.  Will the colors attract the eye?  Will the information be readable from a distance?  Is everything concise enough to be read in a few moments as you’re passed on the highway?  Once you’ve made up your mind, reply to us via e-mail, fax, or phone, and give us your opinion.  You can request changes and receive a revised proof, or approve the design as it is and move forward to scheduling your appointment.

Our lettering is cut from opague colored vinyl on a Camm-1 Pro vinyl cutter. We offer many colors in our solid opaque vinyls. We can also print full color images on white or clear vinyl and die cut them for a logo or photographic image. The images are masked with aheshive paper, and are then ready to be applied to your clean vehicle.

APPLICATION STAGE

Together, you and the Art Department will schedule a day that’s mutually convenient for you to drop your vehicle off for the application.  Please plan to have someone pick you up after dropping your vehicle off, as applying vehicle graphics is a meticulous process that may take several hours.  You don’t want to hang around our office all day, and you don’t want us to rush your application!

Also, please make sure your vehicle is reasonably clean, as the extra time we spend scrubbing it is time you could be enjoying your new graphics!  However, should you wash your vehicle immediately before the appointment, please refrain from using wax or any rain-resistant coating, as this will interfere with the adhesion of your vehicle graphics.

The last consideration to make in scheduling your vehicle application is the vehicle’s size.  If your vehicle is the size of a normal van, car, or truck, we can park it in our indoor bay and complete the application rain or shine.  If your vehicle is very large, however, like an eighteen-wheeler, the application will have to be completed outside, on a dry day when temperatures are above 57° F.  This unfortunately limits large vehicle applications to the warmer months of the year.

Once we have your vehicle in hand, graphic application can begin.  The visual proof sent to you is consulted, and thorough measurements are made to ensure that your graphics and lettering are level, straight, and make best use of the available space.  The vinyl graphics are then carefully applied to the vehicle surface, using the same techniques as in a signage application.  Once everything is applied, and quality control is satisfied with the results, we’ll give you a call to pick your finished vehicle up.

Then it’s up to you to make use of your new moving advertisement!
